Unfortunately, transparency means that I need to tell you about the dumb stuff that I do along with the successes. Telling you about how I managed to get my AdWords Account suspended certainly meets that goal. LOL.

As a side note, I make a lot of mistakes in internet marketing. Over the years I’ve done a bunch of stuff that simply didn’t work and a few dumb things. This is one of the dumb things.

If you’ve been following me for a long time you know that I started internet marketing in 2007, around Thanksgiving, when I saw an episode of the Today Show where they talked about a guy who was making $11,000 a month from AdSense. I was so totally fascinated that I started working on internet marketing the next day.

First, You Try Everything

When I first got started I tried lots of stuff (including AdSense and AdWords), because after all I didn’t know anything about internet marketing at that time. One of the things that I tried was CPA marketing. (Cost Per Action marketing) This is a form of internet marketing where you get paid every time one of your prospects takes an action, like signing up to an email list, clicking on a link, or entering their zip code.

You see these kinds of offers all the time.

Right now the most annoying and popular CPA offer that I see is an offer for a free iPad. Those people who are advertising that, in general, are getting paid for every lead that enters their contact information. The people who are running those campaigns generally are not at all interested in iPads or drumming up business for Apple. What they’re interested in generating leads comprised of people who wish they had an iPad.

This can be a very effective form of internet marketing and is generally combined with pay-per-click. So what people usually do is they buy ads from someplace like Google and they drive that traffic to some sort of CPA landing page or some other pre-sales page that drives to the CPA page.

My Early AdWords Experiments

So in early 2008 I was experimenting with this and I was trying to understand how it worked. I did some experiments in one of the most popular high traffic niches there is, weight loss.

Since 2008 I’ve learned that Google has some very strict terms of service for what kinds of sites you can advertise to. If you’ve been reading recently you know that they went through and did a massive audit of Google Adwords and suspended a lot of accounts.

Now, I currently don’t use Google AdWords at all and wasn’t worried about this one bit. But, last week my buddy Josh Spaulding was talking to me about a project that he’s working on and asked me to check something in my AdWords account. Imagine my surprise when I saw the following message at the top of my Adwords account.

Well, of course I contacted Google for more information and they very politely told me that some of the sites that I was advertising didn’t meet Google’s terms of service. Bottom line: AdWords Account Suspended indeed! I’m not sure exactly when they suspended my Adwords account, but it hasn’t been suspended for more than a couple of months. I’m really surprised to see that they looked all the way back to 2008 to decide whether or not my Adwords account was okay.

Adwords Account Suspended Forever

Of course I figured this would be no big deal because this happened a long time ago. So I contacted Google and let them know that back in 2008 I ran a brief campaign, this particular campaign was only 49 clicks. I said I believe that the site met their terms of service back in 2008, but obviously it didn’t now, and that I wasn’t running the account now so everything should be okay.

They replied to me with a form letter and said basically once you point to any site that ever violates Google’s terms of service you’re done and have a nice day. While they did reply to me in a prompt manner, their reply was very form letter style and basically they indicated there is no way to ever get your Adwords account back.

Why in the world would Google want to suspend my Adwords account? After all, I’m the client, I’m paying Google money to place ads. The answer is very clearly that Google is first and foremost trying to achieve the best possible user experience. They want to filter ads so that goofy weight loss ads that promise 50 pounds of weight loss in two days aren’t advertised on their network.

Google Has Their Reasons

Think about it this way. If your mom or dad goes to Google and they click on the paid ads, Google doesn’t want junk sites showing up for your mom or dad who may not be very internet savvy and who may be taken in by these scams that admittedly are very marginal from a Federal Trade Commission standpoint.

So here’s my Adwords advice for you.

#1. Don’t take Adwords advice from me. Just kidding, I have lots of Adwords advice, but my account is banned so your mileage may vary.

#2. Make sure that you only advertise legitimate sites that meet Google’s terms of service. For me the best way to do this is only drive traffic to sites that you actually control. I think probably the best way to run Adwords is to drive traffic to your own sites and have affiliate links on that site with content that pre-sells the money sites that you’re trying to drive traffic to. That way you’re always in control of the content on the Adwords promoted site.

#3. Abandon hope of ever getting Google to unsuspend your account. Here’s a snippet of one of the emails that they sent me that shows that they’re not at all interested in dealing with internet marketers. What they really want are legitimate brick and mortar business people advertising in their network, driving high quality targeted ads to real products. They are not interested in internet marketers selling get rich quick schemes or other kind of weight loss junk on their network.

We've all read the hundreds of information product sales pages that show pictures of Internet marketers lounging on beaches, resting in hammocks, riding in limousines (with a supermodel on each arm), and dining in fancy restaurants. Of course the message is clear, it's easy to make money online.

But if you're like me, your experience is a little different. You recognize that making money online is hard work. Or maybe, worse than that, you've been trying to make money online for a long time and haven't seen any real results.

It kind of makes you wonder, how many people actually make money online? And for those that do, how much do they make?

Because I was kind of wondering the same thing, I decided to do a simple anonymous survey of my readers to try and understand their internet marketing income, how long they been trying to make money online and whether or not they were having any success. I call it the

Internet marketing income survey.

By the way, if you are an Internet marketer and not had a chance to take the survey yet, it's still available online. I'd love to add your anonymous responses to the survey database.

Internet Marketing Income Survey Summary

As I mentioned, the purpose of the Internet marketing income survey was simply to get a sense of how many people are actually having success making money online, and how much money those people are making. I also wanted to know how people are trying to make money online, and what they wish they had to help them make money online.

I knew from experience that in order to get a significant number of responses, I would need to keep the survey short and to the point. Nobody hates taking a long complicated survey more than me, so I limited the survey to 4 simple questions.

To get things started, I created the survey using a free tool on my website here at MasonWorld.com called LimeSurvey. I like using LimeSurvey because it gives me control over the data and the survey without the hassle of a monthly charge. Admittedly, LimeSurvey is a little bit less sophisticated than tools like survey monkey, but that's not a problem for a simple survey like this.
Once the survey was created, I sent a simple email to a portion of my mailing list asking for survey participants. I got 135 responses very quickly, and I'll be sharing those with you today.

Those 135 responses represent the initial results from the Internet marketing income survey.

Meet the Initial Survey Respondents

For me, the first question was to understand how long people have been trying to make money online. After all, if you are not making money online but have only been trying for 3 months, that's one thing. If you have been at it for 4 years with no real progress, that's another

As you can see from the above graphic, the people responding to the survey have a big range in online experience. While 12% have fewer than six months under their belt online, well over half the respondents have been on line more than two years. According to the results, 11 respondents have been online since early 2000 or before (really?).

In any case, there is a wide range of responses, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Internet Marketing Income Survey Business Models

The next question is, what are all of these people doing online? Not surprisingly, most of them are doing some sort of affiliate marketing or blogging (as you can see from the graphic below).

One mistake that I made in creating the survey was that I left off the comment field for "other" -- so people did not have a chance to tell me what other business models they were using. I was surprised to see that while there were many people doing affiliate marketing and blogging, most of those are not also doing email marketing.

Another surprise is the tiny number of membership sites. With all the talk about membership sites over the last 3-4 years, I expected to see more of those.

So, Are People Making Money?

No, Not really (at least not on average).

As you can see from the graphic below, the vast majority of respondents are making less than $1000 per month. Interestingly, one responder is claiming $100,000 per month, which is totally awesome if true.

I hope you're not totally discouraged by these statistics. The great news is that one out of about every 12 people that were surveyed are making more than $2000 a month online. that's actually fantastic news given the fact that we know that many people fail because they quit too soon, or because they were never really serious about Internet marketing to begin with.

So please, don't take these results as an indictment of Internet marketing is a way to make a living. Rather, understand that in order to be successful online you're going to have to work hard and have a good plan. you've got to add value to your market place and you got to care about people.

My Thoughts About The Survey

I am an engineer, so I am trained to look at data and evaluate it. The 1st thing you might conclude from looking at the survey is that most people don't make very much money online. And while that might be a correct conclusion, there are several problems with the survey that need to be addressed before we sound the alarm and alert the media.

The 1st thing that concerns me is that 135 people is not a large enough sample for survey like this. That's exactly why I labeled these as initial results. It's my hope that readers of the survey and their friends will pass along these results and encourage others to take the survey. it's my hope that we can get at least 1000 participants, and I think 10,000 is probably a better number if we really want to do some meaningful analysis of the results.

My 2nd concern about the survey is related to the 1st. The limited number of people that filled out the survey are mostly readers of my blog. Most, but not all, readers of my blog are reading it because they're trying to figure out how to make money online. So, by putting the survey out to people who read my blog, we've automatically prejudiced the survey towards people who are not making money online. I'm not exactly sure how to deal with this one, because people who are very successful making money online are busy doing that, not filling out surveys.

I hope you've enjoyed these results. if I can get 1000 respondents to the survey I'll do a new post to show the new expanded data set. Please take a moment to post the link to this article to twitter, Facebook, and Google+ using the buttons on the left so we can get the word out.

If you are an Internet marketer and not had a chance to take the survey yet, it's still available online. I'd love to add your anonymous responses to the survey database.

Thanks!

New marketers and old alike will tell you that choosing a domain name is no small task. It's a little scary too, because once you’ve picked a domain name, it’s hard to change to another domain down the line.

On top of that, your domain is what other people will remember you by. It’s what other websites will use to link to you. It’s the crux of your whole online business. That's why knowing how to choose a domain name is so important.

So, a great question is, what should you look for when choosing a domain name?

Here is a checklist that will help you figure out how to choose a domain name for your internet business.

How To Choose a Domain Name Checklist

☐ Memorable. Is your new domain name easy to remember? For marketing reasons, your domain name should have a nice ring to it. It should roll off your tongue and be easily memorable.

☐ Short. Short domain names are best. The shorter the domain name, the more likely you are to get someone to remember it. Single-word domains are considered premium domains for this reason. That said, getting your hands on a single word domain name in your market is quite difficult (especially for dot com domains). You’ll likely have to settle for a two-word or three-word domain. Still, try to make the domain as short and easy to remember as possible.

☐ Numbers. No numbers, no dashes, no exceptions. It’s very confusing to have to say to someone “its 3 cubes dot com, with the number three” or “it’s three spelled out.” It’s also confusing to say “the domain is domain dash word dot com.” It’s hard to remember and just doesn’t work very well for word of mouth referrals. Just forget about it. This is one of the most important tips that I offer people who ask me how to choose a domain name.

☐ Spelling. One possible spelling only please. Avoid words that are spelled differently in other countries. For example, “colors” can also be spelled “colours.” Again, passing the domain along with word of mouth becomes very difficult with such words. Also avoid domains that have to be plural. Only register a domain name with an “s” in it if you can also get the domain without the “s” and redirect it.

☐ Visual. Make sure it looks good lowercase. A lot of domains only look good when they’re uppercase. For example, BirdsStore.com might look great upper case, but looks odd when birdsstore.com is lowercase.

☐ Dot COM. Top level domain matters. In general, you should stick with only .com domains. If you can get your hands on a really great .net or .org domain that’s better than any .com you can find, go ahead and grab it. But you should generally avoid any other TLDs in my opinion.

Of course, there are lots of exceptions to my rules about how to choose a domain name -- in this case the exception is if you’re actually starting a local website. For example, if you’re starting a site in the UK, you may very well want to register a .co.uk domain.

☐ SEO. Search engine keywords. Truth told, there is lots of debate about how to choose a domain name. Most people will tell you that your domain name can play a significant role in getting ranked well in search engines. Certainly, if you can get the exact domain name for a keyword you want to rank for in the search engines, your domain name alone can give you a nice boost (at least for now). The trick is in selecting a search engine friendly domain that also has a nice ring to it.

My personal feelings about keywords in domains is that they should help the user understand what the domain is about. Like content, domain names should be targeted at users not search engines.

It is certainly true that you can get rankings for long tail keywords by with exact match domains and thin content. But updates like Panda show us that eventually, Google will sort though things that don't help the user (like the domain name) and focus on things that do (like content). An exact match domain with crappy content will eventually tank.

So....keywords in the domain name are fine. They may even give you a boost in the long run. But I would not focus too much on that -- ultimately it is the content that matters.

☐ Thesaurus. Having trouble finding a domain that makes sense? Try alternate words. If you’re having trouble coming up with good domain names, try finding similar words to the words in your keyword using tools like Thesaurus.com or the Google Keyword Tool.

☐ Brainstorm. Compile a list of potential domains. You might not always be able to get the exact domain you want. Instead of coming up with just one domain name you want, try to come up with a list of 20. Then use a mass checker, available free on many domain registrars to find out which one(s) are available.

Need more help figuring out how to choose a domain name. Try http://www.bustaname.com. It's perfect for brainstorming with loads of options.

☐ Feedback. Ask your friends what they think about your domain name. No matter how great you think the domain name is, the real test is other people in the real world. Try to ask friends who’ll give you their real opinions, not just tell you that they think it’s really great even when it’s not. Make sure they’re able to actually figure out the typed in domain name easily based on you telling the domain verbally.

☐ Shop Around. Browse forums and auctions. Look at sites like GoDaddy Auctions, Sedo, NamePros forums and other such sites for premium domains. For example, if you wanted to pick up a domain like “renovation.com,” you’re probably never going to find it available for registration. On the other hand, you might be able to pick up some true winners in expired auction auctions or domain name forum sales.

☐ Relax. As you can tell a lot can go into picking a domain name. Don’t rush the process and make sure you really pick a domain name that you can be proud of in the long run.

For a long time I’ve been interested in the product SENuke and, as I reported many months ago in a blog post, I actually bought that tool with the intent of reviewing it. The problem was that the tool is so complex and requires a considerable amount of work to get it going.

For those of you that don’t know, the SENuke tool is a tool that massively creates a web of backlinks pointing to your site with the goal of improving your search engine rankings for particular keywords.

SENuke Is Really Pretty Cool

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that the SENuke tool is poorly designed, quite the opposite. In fact, I was very impressed with the tool and all of its capabilities (including the SENuke Training). But, the truth of the matter is if you want to use SENuke you’ve got to create content, you should spin that content, you’ve got to create a promotion strategy, put all that together and really work for at least a few minutes on that promotion machine each and every day.

As much as I’d love to be able to do that I just really can’t (or don't want to). So my copy of SENuke X sat on the shelf for many months and I finally cancelled my subscription because I just simply wasn’t using the product.

By the way, this is a huge way to waste money as an internet marketer. Whenever you buy something you need to make darn sure that you use it. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve actually purchased something and never even looked it, just because I thought it was a good idea and I’d get to it someday. My recommendation is if you didn’t know that you needed something before you get the sales letter, you don’t need it.

Even having said all that, I’ve still been curious about the effectiveness of SENuke. Recently I learned about a service called Nuke4Me. Nuke4Me is an outsourcing service that runs SENuke for you. They create the content, you just provide them websites and keywords that you want them to promote and they run SENuke for you, generating tons of backlinks on various article marketing sites, Web 2.0 properties and RSS feeds.

Bottom Line: I decided that even though it’s incredibly expensive I would do a Nuke4Me Review by runing the following test to see if Nuke4Me could help me with a few sites that I have. So here’s the test.

My Nuke4Me Review (and Case Study)

I have three very similar Adsense mini sites that I have created and they all were created almost two years ago. They’re on related topics in a particular niche. One site, the most profitable one, ranks number two for its keyword, and has done so for many months. The second site has ranked at the bottom of page one or the top of page two for its keyword for many months. And the third site ranks on page six or seven and always has. It has, to my knowledge, only occasionally appeared on the first page of Google.

So I have the first site, which ranks on the first page of Google ranking second for its keyword and incidentally makes around $5.00 a day. I have the second site, which makes something around the order of $5.00 a month ranking at the bottom of the first page or the top of the second page. And I have the third site, which makes no money at all because it’s buried back on page six for its keyword.

Does Nuke4Me Work As Advertised?

So my question is if I use Nuke4Me.com for two months and promote all three of these sites equally, can I improve their search engine rankings enough to pay for the service? That is the real reason for this Nuke4Me Review. Plus, if I can create a few sites that actually pay for my investment in Nuke4Me.com then additional use I have for Nuke4Me.com is essentially free, the service has paid for itself. That’s the idea.

My plan is to report back to you monthly about what’s going on with these sites and how they’re ranking. I’m using MarketSamurai to track the Page Rank and backlinks for these three sites and the ranking for the keywords. We’ll see what happens.

I’ll be very interested to find out if the websites improve, as I expect they will, or if Google detects these shenanigans and the websites tank, in which case this will be a very expensive experiment.

One Problem With Nuke4Me

I have already noticed one thing that I’m a little bit uncomfortable with regarding the Nuke4Me service. The content that the Nuke4Me team is using to get out there and promote the sites, the content that contains backlinks to my sites is pretty crumby. In fact, a lot of times it’s something that you would clearly identify as spam. I’m very uncomfortable creating hundreds or thousands of completely worthless articles on the internet just for the purpose of improving the ranking of my websites.

Now, my websites are actually great quality websites. They’re small, but the articles on the websites were written by an expert in the field and they are truly helpful. So I’m providing excellent content on my websites and I’m trying to get that content to rank in Google so that people can find it, that’s a good thing. I also want to make money with those websites, that’s also a good thing from my perspective.

But, if I have to do it by spamming the internet with a bunch of worthless content I’m not sure that’s a good long term business strategy for me. I really want to be the guy who makes the internet a better place. So I’ll have to think long and hard about what I do with the Nuke4Me service long term.

Wait And See

For now, this is just an experiment and we’ll see what happens. I don’t think I’ll substantially damage the internet in two months of running Nuke4Me. I’ll update you in a month with the results.

If you have questions about Nuke4Me or SENuke X, I’d love to answer those, just leave them in the comments below. I’d also welcome opinions and ideas about the quality of the content being used in the Nuke4Me promotions and toeing the line of spamming the internet, we can discuss that in the comments as well.

One of the reasons that I really like Cliff Ravenscraft (there are many) is that he talks about building a brand-based communities by touching people one at a time. I have always felt this way, and even though I am terrible at it sometimes, I know it is the right way to build a business.

(By the way, I am interviewing Cliff on the podcast next week).

Basically, it's a question about How To Treat Readers.

I cannot tell you how many times I have made a decision to do something based on whether or not someone paid attention to me or my situation. For example, I recently switched my backup to BackBlaze simply because they responded to my Tweets. There are lots of backup tools out there, but I use them because the care.

A Mailing List Example

Now most blogging gurus will tell you that you need to have a mailing list (“the money is in the list”). I agree that you need a list, but it goes way beyond money. All of that is the subject for another post some day.

Those same bloggers that talk about the importance of lists will tell you to ignore (or turn off) unsubscribe comments. I use Aweber, and you can certainly do that. After all, you usually only get comments from people that are angry about something — that is why they are unsubscribing in the first place.

The gurus argue that you should protect yourself from all that negative energy and just have those comments go to trash. What’s the point in listening to the rantings of an angry former subscriber anyway.

Man, I could not disagree more.

How To Treat Readers

To make this point clear, I wanted to share the following example from this morning.

Today, I got this unsub notification:

Now, I get these all the time. Basically, this guy is just trying to focus. I actually highly recommend this approach. The Internet Business Mastery guys call this an "information diet". If all you are doing is reading my blog (and others) all day long and not making progress in your business, then that is bad for BOTH of us.

Anyway, I replied to Jeff and said this:

This is a very (very) smart thing to do.
Good luck!
Be sure to let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you Jeff.

Regards,
Mark

Now, I really meant every word of it -- but look at this reply.

Now, I don't know if he will actually resub, I did not reply to him as a retention strategy (although that is a benefit of caring for customers). I am not trying to sell him something (although I may in the future). Who knows? It just doesn't matter because it is not my focus.

I just started out doing two critical things:

I did not take his unsub personally

I responded his unsub professionally

I stayed focused on what would actually help the reader

It took me 13 seconds to reply to his email. I don't get to them all. I don't always get a reaction. I am not perfect. Not even close.

But, my heart is in the right place. And that is often really what matters.

What do you think? Does all of this matter, or am I wasting my time? Leave a comment below.

(Instructions on How To Vote below).

But first...

Here's why to Vote For Pat.

I think most people would agree that the Smart Passive Income Podcast with Pat Flynn is certainly one of the best (if not the best) internet marketing podcasts out there right now.

What sets the Smart Passive Income Podcast (SPI) apart? Glad you asked.

1. SPI is real. Pat is a real guy that really makes money online. Pat talks about what he really does and reports real numbers about real thing like traffic, conversions, and income. It's all real.

2. Pat is honest. He tells you like it is, and does not pretend to know about things that he does not know about. He talks about real stuff that really happened to him in the hope that it will help people. No B.S. from Pat -- ever.

3. Pat is relevant. Pat is not talking about stuff that worked for him 10 years ago when everything was different. Rather, Pat is talking about stuff that worked this morning, last week and yesterday.

Bottom line is that SPI is my favorite podcast right now.

I want you to show Pat some love by voting for Pat.

You see, the 7th Annual Podcast Awards kick of today, and I wanted to give you a heads up so that you can vote for Pat (and so that you do not miss the event).

This is a big deal (and a great way to say thanks to Pat), as the 2010 event attracted over 1 million listeners to the voting site.

The 7th Annual Podcast Awards Ceremony will be held in Los Angeles, during BlogWorld & New Media Expo from Nov. 3-5. Pat will be there as a speaker, and nothing would make me happier than to see Pat get an award at the show. It's just to perfect.

So, go vote. I would consider it a personal favor.

Voting Instructions.

2011 Nominations Now Open!
Nominations close @ 2359 September, 30

Please vote for Pat in both the People'c Choice and Business categories. This is VERY IMPORTANT.

Don't forget to add your details at the bottom of the form.

That's it!

Thanks,
Mark

Looks like the holiday weekend in the United States (Labor Day) and back-to-school activities got the best of me. I also sang in a 9-11 memorial concert as a guest with the Allen Symphony Chorus. Busy -- but that is no excuse.

So, I am going to try to make it up to you by squeezing in an update now and over the weekend.

After thinking about it and doing some product research, I have decided to target the teeth whitening niche. I will devote an entire post to why I decided to do that, and even discuss the critical rule that I am breaking by selecting that niche. Look for that post over the weekend.

In the mean time, I wanted to tell you about the 5 site types that I think about when building an affiliate site, and explain what type of site I plan to build for the open niche project.

Affiliate Website Type 1: Landing Page Site

Once upon a time, affiliate marketers would create a single-page (or maybe 2-3 page) site that was just for landing visitors and converting to an affiliate offer (usually CPA).

Typically, marketers would drive traffic to these sites using PPC or some other paid method. Google does not like these sites very well, because they don't generally add value to the search experience. They are generally junk sites and usually get low website quality scores (resulting in higher ad cost) and are generally hard to rank in search engines. I don't recommend building these sites for affiliate marketing anymore - but they can have applications for sales letters and lead capture pages if you have a good source of traffic (like your list).

Affiliate Website Type 2: Single Keyword Sites

I used to build a lot of these. This is a site that typically has several pages (5-10 maybe), but really is only targeting a single long-tale keyword on the front page. Often this site is set up for AdSense or some other "fire and forget" revenue stream.

In general, the idea with these sites is you target a long tail, low competition, high value keyword like "Austin Healey restorations". You build the site quickly (like a couple of days or less), rank for the keyword of interest, and move on. Fire and forget. Ranking these sites can be pretty easy, especially if the if you are good at picking keywords, and the keyword that you are targeting matches the domain name.

The last few Google updates (along with lots of google manual review) are making these sites less and less valuable. As they should, Google is trying to eliminate sites that are created just for the purpose of sniping keywords.

Affiliate Website Type 3: Review Sites

My buddy Josh Spaulding has made some good money with these types of sites. He even has a product out there on how to do this called Easy Review Sites.

With this type of site, you target keywords like "Keyword Tool Review" and you review several keyword tools (for example). On each review page, you target longer tail keywords like "Market Samurai Review" or "Micro Niche Finder Review").

These site can be profitable, and if the reviews are good (and honest), they can add value. But often times these sites are abused. False claims on the reviews can attract the FTC. So, be sure you are creating something real if you go this route.

Affiliate Website Type 4: Authority Sites

In my mind, an authority affiliate site is the kind of site that attempts to do the best from all of the other three sites. Specifically, it captures leads, targets keywords (providing what is being searched for) and reviews products.

This is the sort of site we are going to build in the Teeth Whitening niche.

We are going to answer peoples questions about teeth whitening and recommend products. We are also going to capture their email addresses and send them free stuff by email.

You'll love it (and so will they).

Until next time,
Mark

The big picture for the Open Niche Project and the current status. Finding a niche

Well, this is supposed to be a Thursday update, but it's Friday (you knew that). The real honest truth is that I fell asleep on the couch last night. That happens some times. I made the mistake of watching Burn Notice (I really like that show - and the episode was really good). Problem is, I never got up. Television and part-time internet business don't mix very well, but that is a whole other series of blog posts about staying motivated in your internet business.

By the way, if you missed it, you can check out an overview video that I made on YouTube. I have included it below.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0apkrtma7s

I have also created an Open Niche Project Home Page where we can keep track of our progress.

I thought it would be useful at this stage of the project to visualize the goals for our project. In other words, when we are done, what do we want to have, and what will it take to get where we want?

In the words of some development guru (Zig Ziglar or Stephen Covey), It's really important that you "begin with the end in mind."

We are trying to build a site that attracts visitors and converts those visitors to buyers of affiliate products.

We want our site to reach "phase one success." Phase one success is defined by me as $250/month in monthly profit (not revenue).

We want to get our traffic from search engines and social media. We can choose to pay for traffic, and will will do some email marketing (newsletter and auto responder), but our focus will be on ranking in the search engines.

Affiliate Marketing Mathematics

So, how do we make $250 per month on a website? Let's look at some affiliate marketing math.

Let's say that we can find an offer that pays us in the neighborhood of $20 per sale. That is actually what Andrew recommends in Unstoppable Affiliate. If we are going to make $250 per month (ignoring expenses for the moment) then we need to sell 13 items per month. (13 x $20 = $260). That is about one sale every 2 days (more or less).

Now, what needs to happen for us to actually sell a product?

This is a question of conversion rates. A conversion rate is simply the number of visitors that you get versus the number that take the action that you want. For example, if a visitor visits our site and then clicks on our affiliate link to a product, that is a conversion. The conversion rate is just the actual number of conversions that occur divided by the number of visitors. So, if 100 people visit our site and 3 people click our affiliate link (3 people convert), that is a 3% conversion rate. That's 3/100 = 3%. Get it?

A Conversion Example

So now that you know what conversions are and what conversion rate is, let's talk about an affiliate product site. For this example, I am going to just make up some numbers.

In the site that we are imagining, we actually need three big conversion steps to make a sale.

We need a visitor to find us in Google or Bing and click our site in the search results (conversion 1).

Then, we need that visitor to click our affiliate link (conversion 2).

Finally, we need the visitor to buy from the affiliate site (conversion 3).

When the traffic is coming from search, we only get paid if we make all three conversions. To get the total conversion rate for our sales funnel, we need to multiply theses conversion rates (don't panic about the math, I brought pictures). In fact, I think a specific example would be good here (we'll keep it simple).

Imaging a search term that gets 2500 searches per day. We rank number one (good for us). Conventional wisdom says we could get around 40% of the search traffic for that term. This is changing some with the integration of social into search, but for now, let's say 40%. This means that of the 2500 people that typed our search term into Google, 1000 of them (2500 x 40% = 1000) clicked on a link that took them to our site. Very cool (free traffic is very cool).

Let's talk about those 1000 visitors. Imagine that our copy is so compelling that 10% of those 1000 visitors click our affiliate link. That's a 10% conversion rate, and it means that 100 people (1000 x 10% = 100) will visit the affiliate product sales page.

Now, let's say that 20 of those 100 visitors to the affiliate product sales page actually buy the product (that would be a 20% conversion rate). If that happens to us, then our sales page conversion rate is 20% (and we should celebrate as many people would kill for that rate).

Here is a picture that might help.

Affiliate Marketing Overveiw

Note that your mileage will vary depending on your conversion and traffic numbers.

So, we started with 2500 people in Google and got 20 sales.

Our overall conversion rate from search to sale is 20/2500 or about 0.8%. Our site conversion rate is 20/1000 or 2%.

Make sense?

Note that the numbers that make sense here will depend on the quality of your incoming traffic (how targeted is it), the quality of your sales copy, and the quality of the offer sales page. So your numbers could be anywhere. You just have to build the site, test and improve from there.

So, for the Open Niche project, we will be shooting for about 2500 visitors per month (about 85 per day) to start, and we will see what happens from there.

Once we have some traffic and some data, we will revisit this model and see how we are doing with respect to our model.

I hope you have enjoyed this affiliate marketing overview.

Got Questions?

I'll bet you have a ton of questions about this post. Bring 'em!

Regards,
Mark

In the Open Niche Project, I openly blog about building an new niche site from scratch while following the Unstoppable Affiliate course.

Well, it's time to announce a new project!

I am calling it the Open Niche Project, because I plan to openly build and promote a niche website (sort of a niche marketing example) right here on MasonWorld.com.

For a several months now, I have been looking for an opportunity to "fully re-engage" at MasonWorld.com. As usual, I am interested in creating something that is really valuable to both me and my readers. To be honest with you, nothing else ever works on the internet (you can quote me).

If the thing being created is not valuable to the creator and the user, it will eventually die. To have a sustainable business, you must create value. It really is that simple.

But I digress...

With that in stuff mind, it occurred to me that I could do something fun with Andrew Hansen's new Unstoppable Affiliate course. A few weeks ago, I reviewed Unstoppable Affiliate, and told you that I thought it was the best Affiliate Marketing course that I had seen in a long time.

Easy for me to say, right?

My Project Idea -- Niche Marketing Example

So, it occurred to me that it would be fun to see if I can do several things at the same time. Basically what people needed (it seemed to me) was a detailed niche marketing example.

Work on a new affiliate site for about an hour every day for a month or two (or three).

Log my progress on my Facebook Fan Page every day.

Blog about creating a new affiliate website from scratch (one blog post per week).

Mainly follow along through Unstoppable Affiliate and add in other resources as I go.

Create a free resource that people can use and learn from.

Answer people's questions along the way (that is my favorite part).

Prove that someone with a job can build a business online.

That makes is clear what my readers would get: A great resource (when I am done), a roadmap to follow, and inspiration.

I think a "niche marketing example" is exactly what a lot of new marketers will need to get started. Right now I am thinking about a product site -- but that is still open for discussion during the research phase of the project.

But What Is In It For Me?

But what do I get? I said before that there has to be value for the creator.

Well, I like helping people. I know that sounds totally cheesy, but it is true (ask anyone that knows me).

But to be completely honest, that is not the only reason. A project like this will increase reader engagement (if done well). And that will almost certainly result in making this blog more valuable. I'll probably use some tools to make this project happen, and that will result in affiliate sales. I'll also probably sell some copies of Unstoppable Affiliate.

The best thing is that I will feel great about those sales because I will be selling stuff that I believe in and people will be buying the stuff based on my example (not my sleazy sales pitch).

Niche Marketing Example Deja Vu All Over Again

It is true that I have sort of done this twice before (more or less). Many years ago, I did a project I called the "Niche Super Site Project". In that project, I decided to do a site about Elvis. That site gets lots of traffic but does not make a lot of money. This was one of my first projects, and I created it before I knew how to select niches. It turns out that there are just not that many people searching for "Elvis Presley Collectible Neckties" and the like.

Once, I did this in a forum run by Lynn Terry. I never really finished that project. Not sure why.

I also worked on the Niche Site Duel alongside Pat Flynn. There, the goals were different. The chose the "learning guitar niche" which was cool. When that all went down, I was really busy, and I was trying to compete by outsourcing everything, and quite frankly, I lost interest. I never even monetized or promoted the site, I do plan to get back to that site some day.

So, this time I am serious. LOL.

The Open Niche Project Plan

For those of you that are new to affiliate marketing, this is basically what needs to be done.

Commit to the project and announce (this post)

Review the niche site duel and unstoppable affiliate materials

Keyword research and niche selection

Domain purchase and site building

Content creation and monetization

Promotion

Promotion

Promotion

Never forget that Internet Marketing is mostly marketing (more on this later). That should become clear to everyone in this open niche marketing example.

So, here we go. Right now I am looking at Thursday as the official update day. So stay tuned.

Regards,
Mark

Product reviews remain one of the most effective tools in the affiliate marketer's arsenal. As a result, I often get asked about FTC guidelines regarding product endorsements and testimonials. Of course, I am not a lawyer or a government official. If you need advice about FTC rules, you should consult one of those sorts of people.

In the mean time (while you are searching for a lawyer that you can both understand and afford), you can enjoy this guest post from my friends Loretta and Lisa Marie, who have spent some time researching the subject and breaking the issues down into English.

FTC Guidelines And Product Reviews

The Federal Trade Commission has approved recent revisions concerning the use of testimonials in endorsements. It is now required to disclose any connections with the company or the manufacturer of the product being reviewed. It should also be specified when the product was acquired as complimentary merchandise from a certain company. Any compensation received by an online writer in exchange for reviewing a product must be disclosed. This transparency enables buyers to be aware of any connections between the blogger and the product manufacturer. This will ideally make readers more aware and more pragmatic about whose statements carry more weight.

This rule will also positively impact your reader’s view, they may assume that if you freely disclose where you have acquired the product then you have nothing to hide and your reviews are genuine. Product reviews can easily conform to FTC guidelines by adding a short statement about the product’s procurement.

Product reviews is still one of the best ways to generate affiliate commissions.

Reviews ensure sales every day by giving prospective clients information that will conclude with a purchase. Consider the fact that people always ask the opinion of others before buying a certain product. Buyers gather information by asking people who have tried the products themselves. Putting reviews in the site transforms you from a promoter to an individual who objectively describes specific merchandise. You are no longer a salesman who inspires suspicion or doubt; you are now a credible source who reveals benefits and possible disadvantages.

Many affiliate marketers use the same content in their landing page as the ones seen in the manufacturer’s promotional site. This is a common mistake that should be avoided. Uniqueness is valued in online marketing because prospective buyers gravitate to honest content.

Use reviews as a way to impel readers to click on the affiliate links you have posted, get their attention and stimulate their curiosity.

Avoid being obviously biased and adapt an impartial tone. Truth is highly regarded by readers and when a few minor negative traits are mentioned, this is seen as a sign of an honest review and will actually result in more sales.

Include specifics to give the impression that the product has been thoroughly tried and tested. Making review sites that link to affiliate products is great way to promote a product without doing it outright. Promotional articles discourage prospective buyers because they are understandably seen as biased views.

Good reviews are essential for an affiliate venture to work. They should be written to appeal to the majority. This means they should be engaging, filled with information and be easy to understand.

Use PLR or Private Label Rights articles as a cheaper alternative to hiring personal writers when you are lacking in writing skills. PLR articles can be given a unique twist by incorporating how the product has helped personally.

Present a situation that many people experience and can relate to. Credible content will establish your site as a reputable source which will generate more traffic, and in turn, more commissions.

Here is a niche for you, including some free keyword research.

From time to time I like to spend a few minutes exploring new niches and checking them out on spyfu.com. When I put a keyword phrase into the spyfu tool, I am looking for a cost per click over $1.50 and more than 10 advertisers.

If a keyword doesn’t pass that test, I usually toss it. It’s not scientific, but the basic idea is this:

If people are not paying for ads and actually advertising in the niche, it is going to be pretty hard to make money as a affiliate in that niche.

It is starting to get pretty hot here in Texas, and that made me think about a niche site around the topic of “portable air conditioners.” A quick check on SpyFu.com shows that this might be a decent niche to explore:

Here is the output from the popular Keyword Snatcher (affiliate link) tool from Jon Leger. You can use the list to start your own site or further keyword research.

Enjoy,

Many of you know by now that I am combining my evaluation of SENuke X with my desire to get back into the Niche Site Duel.

Of course, this is a perfect match, since you will recall that my “spin” on the niche site duel was to participate using outsourcing and automation. Of course, that was back in August. I got the site up and applied to the affiliate program that I wanted to use. I even got to page one of Google for a while.

Since then, I have been completely distracted by this busy thing called “life”. Most of you know that I have four kids, a day job and tons of other stuff going on.

Still, while doing absolutely nothing about the Niche Site Duel for months, I have been following Pat’s amazing success with his niche site duel security guard experiment. Pat's approach is especially excellent for people who are simply looking for a place to start (getting started can be overwhelming, and Pat breaks it all down).

Where we are now

So, the site is currently sitting at 25 in Google (page 3) for “learn guitar basics”. That was accomplished with no promotion. It has visited page 1. I consider all of this to be a pretty good sign. You can see the current rankings below.

All of this has not resulted in much traffic, and the traffic has been falling month by month. I suspect that some of this is due to buzz around the niche site duel itself falling off. But it’s not all because of that….

As you can see from the below traffic stats, some of the hits have some from SE traffic. Specifically, hits are coming from my keywords. I suspect that most of this traffic came from the times when I was on page one for “learn guitar basics”.

So, the simple task in front of me is to fix up the website so that visitors have a chance to buy something, and to get to #1 for “learn guitar basics”. For that last task, I plan to use SENuke X.

I’ll keep you posted.

Jon Leger is a really cool guy who makes great software. As it happens, he lives pretty close to where I live, and he is currently running a charity promotion. I want to help spread the word, so here is my contribution.

I am giving away some of Jon's software (four software packages described here).

Keyword Snatcher

Answer Analyst

WebComp Analyst

WebData Parser

Here is the story...There's an awesome little museum in the town near Jon and me.

It's called the Interurban Railway Museum.

This museum has a restored railway car that was in use the early 20th century in the city of Plano, Texas, USA. It also has a lot of history about the city and its early inhabitants.

But here is the thing -- this museum is visited by thousands of children every year, including regular field trips from their schools. They also have Story Time and singing for kids. There's even an awesome model train set that has an actual layout of a historic part of the city. It is really cool, and kids love it.

The museum is in trouble, and Jon is trying to help. So, I am trying to help Jon. You can read all about what Jon is trying to do here.

How To Win Free Leger Software

Check out Jon's offer before Midnight CST Friday March 11.
Note -- I don't make any money if you buy.

Buy the software if you want it.
(Again, just to be clear, I get no commission)

Tell people about this post or Jon's site. (facebook, twitter, blog post, etc)

Leave a comment telling me what you did.
(Must be before Midnight CST Friday March 11)

On Monday I will pick one winner from the comments. My choice. My decision is final.

Once winner will get the software described here as if you paid yourself.

If you already purchased the software (recommended), I will paypal you the $47.

That's it.

As usual, I reserve the right to change the rules to handle stuff that I did not think about -- I promise to be fair.

Just to reiterate, EVERY DIME of your purchase from Jon (minus PayPal's fees of course) will go to the Interurban Railway Museum of Plano, Texas, USA. Their address is, in case you're interested: 901 E 15th Street, Plano, TX 75074.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your support.

UPDATE: This promotion is over and with some great news to report! From Jonathan's site (emphasis mine!):

This promotion has now ended. Thanks to all who supported the Interurban Railway Museum. We raised more than $39,000! That will go a long way toward helping the museum and so many people who love it.

Thank you so much, everyone! This was a really great cause to get involved with and I'm thrilled that the internet marketing community came together and really pulled through to help preserve this wonderful museum for our children and the community!

Recently I became acquainted with a podcast expert named Cliff Ravenscraft over at PodcastAnswerMan.com. I have to tell you, Cliff has what I consider to be a near perfect sales funnel in operation there.

Here’s how I experienced Cliff Ravenscraft…

The First time I heard about Cliff was from an authority in the podcast space, Jason Van Orden, over at InternetBusinessMastery.com. He talked about Cliff as an expert on podcasting gear and I needed some, so I went over to Cliff’s website. That’s the first part of the sales funnel.

I found out that he had an outstanding website with all kinds of excellent free information. It was clearly an authority site on podcasting. After reviewing the website, there was no question that Jason was right about Cliff, absolutely an expert on podcasting gear and podcasting in general, for that matter.

So, naturally I did exactly what Cliff wanted me to -- and you can see from his website that he’s set up for this -- I subscribed to his podcast. After listening to several episodes of his podcast I was completely hooked and knew this was the guy for me when it came to podcasting tech.

So, what did I do?

Well, I bought all my new gear from Cliff. That’s exactly what he wanted me to do. He’s got affiliate and drop-ship relationships with all of these products and manufacturers that he actually uses. When I bought the gear, I was so pleased with the free advice that I had gotten from Cliff that I made sure that I bought the gear either directly through Cliff or through his affiliate link. Pure reciprocity.

To be honest with you, I bought stuff that I did not even know I needed. I bought exactly what Cliff uses, and I purchased through his links on purpose.

Following that, of course, I needed help setting up the gear. So, what did I do? I bought some online courses from Cliff about how to set up all this complicated new podcasting gear that I had just purchased.

I have two degrees in electrical engineering, so there is no question that I could figure out all of this stuff by myself -- eventually. But that would take time. My time is worth a lot more than what Cliff is charging for these products, and I get the additional benefit of knowing the best settings and best configurations that Cliff has been able to determine. I could do all that, but it would take me FOREVER.

Now, this very important, because it’s something that all affiliate marketers can do. Cliff is an affiliate for great products. But all products have gaps -- many times these gaps are in the form of training of missing information on how to get the most from the product.

Cliff has recognized gaps between what the customers need and what those products are offering and he is filling them with digital products. This is a key idea for affiliates to grow their internet business and one that Cliff does amazingly well.

What’s Cliff missing? Well, I wouldn’t say he’s missing anything, but of course the next step would be for Cliff to have some massive high end product. Oh wait a minute… this month Cliff is actually offering a soup to nuts podcasting course over at PodcastAnswerMan.com. It's very high end and everything you need.

Now, I’m not offering an affiliate link for that here, although I’m sure it’s an awesome course. You can go over to Podcast Answer Man on your own and figure out if that’s for you if you’re interested. If you do sign up, be sure and tell my friend Cliff that Mark sent you.

Watching the world around you for examples of great marketing is a good way to get a free education on the things that you can do in internet marketing to improve your own business. Have a great day!

One of the great things about having a blog is that you can have great readers that are really fun to get to know. Susanne Myers is one of those, and she creates excellent content. So, I was thrilled when she read my post from January 1 and asked to guest post.

Her post below is excellent -- but there is something even better here. I published my other post on the 1st of January (3 days ago). On the morning of the 3rd of January (yesterday), Suzanne had an excellent guest post written and in my inbox. She even put my affiliate links to her products in the post (her stuff is really good by the way).

Anyway, the lesson here (for me and for you) is to take action. Be like Susanne. Whatever it is, just do it.

Growing Your Affiliate Niche Site in 2011

By Susanne Myers – www.AffiliateTreasureChest.com

I loved Mark’s post on online business resolutions and how we often focus on the wrong thing. His analogy that internet marketing can be a lot like losing weight was spot on and I thought I’d take it one step further today and give you some tips on how to grow your affiliate niche site this coming year, focusing on the important things like providing a lot of value and serving your readers.

Adding Content

A great place to start is by adding more content to your site on a regular basis. I find that my larger sites not only get the most traffic, they are also talked about more, get more comments and my lists are growing faster. There’s a bit of a snowball effect going on here… the more people know about your site the more talk about it across social media sites, on their blogs etc.

Does this mean you should get into autoblogging or throw a bunch of rehashed junk on your site? Of course not! What it does mean is that you should take some time out each week (or ideally several times per week) to write some good content and share some interesting tips with your readers. It helps to have a schedule for this. Take a few minutes to figure out how often you can realistically add new content to your site each week. Then create a content schedule and plan out the first few posts or articles. Then make it a priority to get that content added and watch your site and your traffic grow.

Building Your List

Next, I suggest you spend some time building your lists. Lists allow you to get back in touch with your readers regularly and provide them with even more value. Over time you build a mutually beneficial relationship with them and your readers will quickly learn that they can trust your advice and the offers you present to them.

While money should never be the main focus or goal when you’re building your business, it does come in handy, and even in 2011, the money is still in the list. Let’s make this the year we really grow those lists.

Start by taking a look at your lists and optin boxes. Are there things you can improve? Are you split testing your optin forms to find the ones that convert best? Are you following up regularly with your readers? Are you sticking a good balance between providing them with valuable content and making offers?

Expanding Your Reach

Last but not least it’s time to expand your reach. Sure, blogging regularly will get you some traffic and keeping in touch with your list will continue to send them back to your site, but unless you also spend some time marketing your site, you’re missing out on a big chunk of traffic. Here are some things you may want to start doing this year:

Guest Blogging

Write a few guest blog posts for other blogs in your market place. Email the blog owners and ask them if they would consider publishing them on their sites. You can quickly and easy expand your reach with just a few guest posts.

Article Marketing

Article Marketing still works. Get in the habit of writing and submitting articles regularly. I like Mark’s recommendation or Automatic Article Submitter to help you spread your articles far and wide. Again, this is about capturing and audience you wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

Link Building

Both article marketing and guest blogging are excellent ways to build links. Other things you can do are inviting readers to link to you, create “link magnets” (exceptionally good content that people will link to automatically), participating in social media, commenting on other blogs etc. Make an effort to build some links to your site on a regular basis.

If you are ready to learn more about this, take a look at my link building program where I share what I’m doing to build thousands of links that help me improve my search engine rankings and send me traffic.

Viral Reports

Combine some of your articles and guest posts and even your own blog posts into short reports that you can then give away. You could also write something completely new, but I find it more effective to reuse my content this way. When you’re done, post the report on your blog, submit it to ebook sites and of course send it out to your list. Don’t forget to invite readers to share it with friends.

You can make your reports spread even further if you make them brandable. If you have your own products, you can allow people to “brand” the links in the report with their affiliate links. If you don’t have your own products and are strictly an affiliate marketer, allow them to brand some of the links in the report and keep some in there with your own affiliate links. Don’t forget to mention your name and your main site in there as well and link to some of your pages or blog posts were appropriate.

Here’s an example of a brandable report I’ve created recently with my friend Nicole Dean

http://www.brandablestuff.com/tools/weight-loss-blog/

Keep in mind that it’s all about sharing useful information that will help people.

Podcasting

Now here’s something I haven’t done but Mark does really well and I think it has helped him not only extend his reach, but also contributes to his expert status. Take a look at his podcast here:

http://www.masonworld.com/category/podcast/

Next I want you to consider creating and recording your own podcast. It’s definitely something I’m considering doing this year.

For now, keep adding content to your site regularly, build that list and then do something each and every week to expand your reach and watch your affiliate business grow in 2011

And now I’d like to invite you to take a look at my affiliate marketing blog at www.AffiliateTreasureChest.com . While you’re there, take a moment to sign up for regular email updates so you’ll never miss a thing.

And yes, I am taking my own advice and will be providing lots of great content on the blog throughout 2011. Let’s make this the most profitable year yet!

I am sure that many of you have New Year's resolutions about your business. I know that I do. The New Year is a great time to set new goals for your business and get some perspective on the coming months.

New Year's Resolutions can be tricky. Here today, but forgotten in February.

To make matters worse, the thing that I have noticed is that Internet Marketing can be a lot like weight loss.

Here is what I mean.

The Wrong Focus

In weight loss, people tend to set unrealistic goals that focus on the wrong thing. For example, people might set the goal of "lose 50 pounds by summer." The problem with that goal is that it is too aggressive and does not focus on the important stuff -- eat better and exercise more.

In Internet Marketing, I hear people focused on goals like "make $3000/month by summer". This goal has the same problem. Instead of focusing on making money, try focusing on helping more people, or serving more customers, or whatever is appropriate for your business.

Of course, the other problem with the "make $3000/month by summer" goal is that it may not be realistic for your situation. It can take a while to build stable streams of internet income. That simple fact leads to the second problem.

The Quick Fix

The other thing I see in weight loss is people going for the quick (easy fix). People want a pill that will cause them to lose weight without dieting or exercise.

Here is a tip -- if you want to lose weight, eat less and move more.

The same thing applies to your Internet Marketing business. Want to make more money? Add more value to your customers over a sustained time period. Ignore all of the "quick fixes" out there. There is no software that you can buy or program you can follow that will lead to instant riches.

Another tip -- if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Your 2011 Resolution.

So here is the bottom line. Set some business resolutions for 2011, but make sure that they focus on adding value to the internet and your customers. Make sure they address things like sustained effort and consistency.

Do that and you will like the results when it comes time to plan for 2012.

About two months ago, my internet marketing buddy Pat Flynn showed off the amazing results that he achieved on the P90X exercise program. While I was happy for Pat, my first reaction was "wow, is there an affiliate program for that?" LOL. I guess that makes me a die-hard internet marketer.

I did a quick search, and I could not find an "affiliate program" per se. It turns out that there are a few (below). But the lion's share of the marketing is done thorough a coaching program that is organized as multi-level marketing (MLM). Anytime I hear the words MLM in a sentence, I think "Amway" and run the other way. But that is not really fair, so I decided to dig deeper.

Luckily, I was able to find Amanda (actually, she found me). She agreed to help us all understand the MLM coaching program that allows you to sell (and profit from) the P90X phenomenon.

Here is what she had to say:

What You Need to Know About the
Beachbody (P90X) Coaching Program

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months you've probably heard about Tony Horton and the P90X home workout program. As a successful P90X graduate and internet marketer, I couldn't wait to sign-up for the P90X affiliate program. However, after doing some research I discovered that Beachbody (the company that produces P90X) is a network marketing (MLM) company. UGH!

Everything I've ever heard about MLM has been negative so I started looking into other options.

I came up with two alternatives:

1. Amazon

You can earn 4-6% of every P90X sale you refer to Amazon. As an Amazon associate you will also earn a commission for anything else that customer adds to their shopping cart (resistance bands, pull-up bar, etc.).

2. Pepperjam

You can earn $29 for every P90X sale you refer through the Pepperjam Network.

Looking at the numbers Pepperjam seemed like the way to go. But my experience as a P90X graduate told me something different. Because if someone is interested in P90X, chances are they're going to be interested in other Beachbody products. Why? Because P90X works. And if you advertise P90X through the Pepperjam Network you're eventually going to lose that customer to a Beachbody coach who will earn commissions on all future sales that customer makes.

When a customer purchases P90X through an infomercial, Amazon, Pepperjam, or the regular Beachbody website (http://www.beachbody.com) they are randomly assigned to a coach through the customer lead program.

So, I started looking into the coaching program a little more. The FAQ section on the coaching program that Team Beachbody has on their website is pretty vague, so I started emailing other coaches with my questions.

The main problem I had with being a Beachbody coach was that I didn't want to pay any extra fees if I wasn't interested in the business (MLM) aspect. It turns out that there is no minimum monthly purchase requirement if all you want to do is earn commissions on sales. You can recruit zero coaches, sell one $15 Tony Horton One on One DVD, and still earn a 25% commission. If MLM isn't your thing, you can use the coaching program just like any other affiliate program. Beachbody won't hassle you about it!

The other issue I needed clarification on was how much it was going to cost. Beachbody spends millions of dollars on advertising every year and P90X pretty much sells itself so honestly I didn't have a problem with the $14.95 monthly fee. But I wanted to make sure there weren't any hidden fees.

If all you want to do is use the coaching program like any other affiliate program $14.95/month is all you have to worry about it. There is a $39.95 sign-up fee but Beachbody is waiving it until December 31, 2010 to get as many coaches on board before the New Year resolution rush.

Some Additional Costs

However, if you want to work the MLM aspect and qualify for the customer lead program there ARE some additional costs involved. In a nutshell, you need to sell (or purchase yourself) at least $50 worth of products every 35 days and sign-up for a Team Beachbody Club Membership which costs $2.99 every week and is billed $38.87 every quarter.

Of course, a lot of internet marketers will be put off by the monthly service fee. And some are intimidated by the word "coach" because that might sound like extra work. And it can be, depending on how you want to work the business. However, if health and fitness isn't your passion, you certainly don't have to reach out to your customers. The majority of customers don't even know who their coach is unless you choose to reach out to them first.

Some Technical Issues

A major downside to the coaching program is that Beachbody doesn't have a system setup that allows you to track your links or where your clicks are coming from. Hopefully this will be something they will implement in the future. Also, when customers use your affiliate link they will not be taken to the Beachbody P90X landing page (http://www.p90x.com) but are instead sent directly to the product page on the Team Beachbody website(http://teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/P90X). However, most people are already sold on P90X before they reach your website so having a high-converting sales page is probably not a huge issue.

Taking the Plunge

I decided to become a coach in May 2010 and my goal when I signed up was to make $1000/month within one year. Based on where I am now that goal is looking pretty realistic.

If you want to see how much money coaches make, be sure to check out the Statement of Earnings from 2009. It's interesting to note that only 85% of coaches use the opportunity to earn extra income. And from that 15% only a very small number reach Emerald status which is the level where you become eligible for the customer lead program. Some internet marketers feel the market is too saturated with coaches but I don't believe that to be the case. There are currently 30,000+ coaches and less than 10% are focused on building the business. The CEO of Beachbody, Carl Daikeler, is working towards a goal of 1 million coaches within 10 years so there's definitely A LOT of room for growth.

In addition, I've learned that the majority of coaches know very little about internet marketing, especially when it comes to SEO, article marketing, building lists, search engine traffic, etc. They are 100% focused on social media traffic. If you know even a little bit about internet marketing and can setup a WordPress blog you are already light years ahead of the competition.

Amanda K. Jones recently finished her first half-marathon after completing her second round of P90X. She is an Emerald Independent Team Beachbody Coach and would be happy to answer any questions you have about the Beachbody Coaching program. If you're interested in joining her specialized team of coaches, please use the contact form on her website.

This is a true story about a musical friend, an internet marketing guru, me, a major holiday, a talking monkey named Charlie, a Christmas music CD, and some kids in Liberia, West Africa. OK -- I'll admit there is no talking monkey in the story, but it is still worth reading. It's a bit of a long post -- I hope you'll stick with me to the end.

Lions and Tigers And Scumbags, Oh My!

One of the things that really bugs me about the internet marketing industry (if you want to call it an industry) is the total sleaze factor that I see from so many internet marketers. There are so many people out there making unrealistic claims, trading on people’s fear and taking advantage of people’s hopes and dreams.

It just drives me absolutely crazy to see all the sleazebags that are promoting junk products in the internet marketing space.

Now, having said that, there are some internet marketers that base their entire business on a platform of ethics and helping other people . A short list of those includes people like John Leger, Nicole Dean, Lynn Terry, Andrew Hansen and Josh Spaulding. There are many more out there like them (sorry if I left you off), but you have to know where to look.

My most recent favorite good guy is Pat Flynn, by the way.

Case In Point: Nicole Dean

No, Nicole is not a sleaze ball. She's not quite sane either (but that is a topic for another post).

As it turns out, a post of Nicole's from the other day is actually what motivated this post. A couple of weeks ago Nicole published an Expert Brief (Is Marketing Good or Evil) and asked people how they used internet marketing to help other people. I loved this post, because actually this is the magical secret of internet business.

Everybody is always asking, “What’s the secret? What’s the magical product I can buy to drive traffic? What’s the special product I can promote to really make a killing in the marketplace? What’s the magical niche that I can choose and make a killing in two weeks?” The answer is there aren’t any magic bullets except to make sure that you’re always helping people in your business.

Zig Ziglar said it best,

“You can get everything you want in life by giving other people what they want.”

This is true in internet business. If you focus your business on helping your customers get what they need without worrying too much about the money, the money will come. This has been proven time and time again.

But, in Nicole’s case she was asking a different question. She was asking,

“What do your internet marketing skills allow you to do outside of your business to help people?”

Problem: My Answer Was Totally Lame

The problem with my answer was that it was totally lame. I mean, my internet business is built around helping people, but Nicole was asking a different question. Essentially, she was asking what I was doing outside of my business to help people.

My answer: Not all that much.

Then, as if by magic, an opportunity fell out of the sky.

A friend of mine needed help with a charity project. My buddy Phillip is an incredibly talented musician who made a Christmas CD about two years ago. He needed some help with some "internet stuff" related to his project.

Now I would have helped him anyway, but with Nicole's post fresh in my mind I was highly motivated to make some quick progress. I embarked the a project as a favor.

Turns out my friend is doing some great work with a missionary school in Liberia, West Africa.

The Christmas CD that he made is absolutely fantastic and the great thing is that 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the CD go to support a missionary school in Liberia, West Africa.

Phillip started supporting the school after a trip there in 2007 and he’s been sending them money ever since. It turns out that you can pay for one year’s education for a child in Liberia with a mere 100 dollars. That means for every six Christmas CDs that Phillip sells he is able to put a child through school for a year.

Internet Marketing Help Wanted

Now, this is an amazing thing and Phillip has sold a lot of CDs, but he’s mostly sold them to family, friends, and acquaintances. In fact, he had about 300 CDs sitting in a box in his office.

Of course, knowing some internet marketing I was able to offer to help Phillip by creating a website to showcase his CD, sell it online, and take money via Paypal. We launched the website this week and we’re hoping to simply make it easier for people who know me or know Phillip to purchase the CD and help these deserving children in Liberia.

This is just one example of how internet marketers can work to change their reputation by adding value to the internet, by helping people in their community, and by doing the right things to create an industry image that’s worth having.

I’m particularly sensitive to this topic of professional image because I come from a very respectable background in engineering and have worked for 20 years at a company that is known for it's ethics. We just don’t have image problems. So, the image problems that are present in the internet marketing space really bugs me.

Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox now and encourage you to go over to Phillip’s new website and check out his Christmas CD, it’s absolutely fantastic. It makes an excellent gift.

Buy all of the copies you want and all the proceeds will go to help a child in Africa who could really use your help.

And -- My challenge to you comes from my friend Nicole. Do something this month to make the internet a better place.

Thanks!

P.S. -- No, I don't make any money if you buy the CD. Sheesh. All the money goes to the kids.

One of the major challenges of being a part time internet entrepreneur, at least as far as I’m concerned, is managing multiple projects.

My confession to you is that after getting off to a pretty good start on the Niche Site Duel I have completely ignored since my last update two months ago. Of course, this is not surprising. Having a full time job and a part time internet business in addition to four kids and a beautiful wife leaves me pretty busy.

In my last report we were talking about how amazing it was that the site (for no apparent reason) was ranking on the first page of Google for the keyword I had selected, "learn guitar basics." At the time I mentioned that I felt like this was part of the rank and tank phenomenon common with blogs.

Often times when you start a new blog it will go to the top of the rankings briefly only to fall later. My theory on this is that Google very briefly gives a lot of weight to brand new content on the internet to see if it will go viral in terms of backlinks. If this doesn’t happen Google will drop the site out of the rankings.

Now, understand this is just my own personal theory about what Google is actually doing. Nobody actually knows what Google is doing except for Google. If anybody ever tells you that they know what’s going on with the Google search algorithm, they’re probably lying to you unless their name is Matt Cutts. (Just as a side note, Matt might be lying to you just to throw you off, so be careful about that too.)

There's good news and there's bad news...

The bad news is my niche site is no longer ranking in Google. I retain excellent rankings for my keywords in MSN and Yahoo, but those are almost completely worthless from a traffic standpoint. As you can see from the below traffic stats, traffic is very, very light for this websites.

To make matters worse, most of this traffic trickle is from the case study -- not from search.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is I would have had a really hard time explaining to you why the website was ranking on the first page of Google with no backlinks all of the sudden straight out of the gate if that ranking had stuck.

In fact, Pat Flynn and I discussed this and neither one of us could come up with a really good reason for the good ranking other than the rank and tank phenomenon that I described previously. So, the good news is that I don’t have to explain something that I don’t understand.

The second piece of good news is that I need to try and fix this, and that is something I can teach you. So, I’m back on the Niche Site project and I’ll be doing some promotion of this website and explaining to you what I’m doing.

Check for Site Indexing in Google

The first thing you need to do when something like this happens is check and make sure your website is still indexed in Google. If you’ve been dropped from the Google index you have really big problems that are sometimes difficult to solve. Not impossible to solve, but certainly more difficult than if you just have a poor ranking in Google’s index.

As you can see from the below screenshot, our site is still indexed. We determined this using the site: parameter before our website URL, this will show you how many pages of your site are indexed in Google.

As long as you’ve got some indexed, you’re fine. If Google comes back and tells you no pages are indexed it means that they’ve looked at your site and determined for whatever reason it’s not suitable for their index. Once that happens to you it’s possible to get re-included in the index, but I’ve found it to be very difficult. Again, not impossible, but a total pain.

Back to Website Promotion

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll have my virtual assistant undergo several promotion tasks for this website. I’m particularly going to go to trouble to include directory backlinks as part of my promotion strategy so we can see the effect that has. You’ll remember in Pat’s Niche Site Duel "Backlinking Boo Boo" update he cited directory backlinks as a mistake. I feel completely the opposite about that, over the years I’ve seen good results from directory backlink submissions as one part of a much larger link strategy. I’ll be discussing that strategy as well as the tool that I use for the submission, Deep Linker Pro, in subsequent posts.

Until then, I’d love to answer any questions you might have about the Niche Site Duel. Feel free to leave a comment in the space below and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can with an answer.

Have a great day!

Update number 4 on teh niche site duel project started by Pat Flynn.

Hey there. It's 5AM here and I am just about to head off to my day job. I am running behind in assigning tasks to my VA for the Niche Site Duel. In fact, we have done very little to work on the site since we put it up. The one exception is that one VA is still rewriting the articles on the site (a few every day). There is no real strategy there -- just trying not to spend too much money on the site all at once.

Most of the traffic on the site is probably coming from people like you who are reading about the duel and then directly typing in the URL. So, don't be too impressed by the traffic stats below. However, I will show the traffic so you can get a sense of what is going on.

What is interesting is that I am starting to see some traffic from organic search (but just a trickle).

And finally, I am seeing one or two clicks on affiliate links. That is really interesting since I have not even set up the affiliate IDs correctly yet. Man, I need to get busy here. Of course I have no idea if these clicks are coming from real visitors. I suspect that the visitor that was searching for Silverhill Guitar Knobs was a real visitor, however. That is pretty neat - and it a natural effect of organic search. You always end up ranking for stuff that you had no idea you would rank for.

That's all for now -- I really need to get on the road to work. More on this later.

Happy to answer any and all questions about the site, the data, or the strategy. Just leave your questions below.

Just a quick update to let you know that my niche site has made it to page one of Google. As I show in the screen shot below, I am currently ranking number one for the term "learn guitar basics" without the quotes. (And yes, I am logged out of iGoogle, GMail, etc). While this result is really cool, we should not declare victory yet. The most important reason for that is the fact that new WordPress blogs tend to "rank and tank". What I mean by that is I fully expect rankings to fall again before they settle out on page one (hopefully in position one on page one).

But for now, it's sure fun to see the site in position #9.

Side note: Now here is the difference between me and Pat Flynn. I just jammed a screenshot in a post with no formatting. I wrote the post in 7 minutes. Pat would have clipped the below graphic with photoshop (using those cool torn edges that he always has), added a 3D shadow and circled the 9th ranking position with a red pen. Everything Pat produces is very high quality. You should pay attention to that, because good quality translates directly to your brand and (eventually) money.

Some errors (opportunities)

Note that in my haste to get the site up that I incorrectly specified the most important on-page factor -- the title tag. The home page should have the title "learn guitar basics." Instead, the page is titled "learning guitar basics." Oops. Looks like there was a typo in what I sent to the VA.

No worries. Since we are using the All-in-one SEO plugin, this is very easy to change when we are ready. I am going to leave it as is for the moment. We'll change it during the "tank" phase.

You'll also note that the site description is defaulting to something goofy that needs to be corrected. It is important to use the site description to call the searcher to action, compelling them to click through to the site.

More on this and other topics in the next update.

Thanks,
Mark
