5 of 5 An Awesome Product Wednesday, November 28, 2007 patrick from South Ogden, UT
I'm going to be completely honest with every body who reads this review. I was really skeptical about this product before the Nuance sales staff resolved my concerns. Now, I'm a huge fan of Dragon Naturally Speaking - Preferred Edition. This product works as advertised. In my case, I needed to transcribe MP3 audio files to text. It worked flawlessly. If you're going to dictate to your computer, make sure you have a good headset. The headset that comes with the product is ok, but its a little uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Having a good headset can make or break the product experience. This product has saved me a lot of time and money. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Finally, a dictation (speech-recognition) software Monday, April 16, 2007 GT from Miami, FL
I'm not a person who likes to type and as I'm getting older, typing a lot for extended periods of times starts hurting my fingers' joints.
When I read about the claims that the software was making which is 99% accuracy, I was more than a little bit skeptical since I've seen other dictation softwares before, that also claimed high accuracies. I'm glad to report that this software actually is pretty close to their claims. For example all of this review is written by using this software!
Another fantastic feature that I would like to report is that you can train the software based on the documents you currently have adding to its vocabulary. Since the dictation software are always dictionary-based, and I'm a scientist using a lot of terminology most of which is not found in common dictionaries that the dictation software generally use, I was still skeptical about the usage of this software for my own purposes. But this document-based training made it a breeze, and I can actually use the software to dictate my documents that are heavily loaded with scientific terminology! That's simply incredible!
Moreover, I'm a non-native speaker, speaking with an accent. I only spent about two hours training this software both by reading, and going through my documents, adding into its vocabulary, and voila!
I would strongly recommend this purchase. Only if it was a little bit cheaper (I'm a graduate student, so I don't make much money :( ). Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Works great out of the box! Friday, April 06, 2007 A Customer from Dallas, Texas
This product is fantastic and works well right out of the box. I installed the software, attached the headset, and started dictating. The initial training of the software only took about 20 minutes, and I'm already using it very productively. Once I read through some of the hints and tips, as well as the user guide I am sure the program will be even more effective. I used voice dictation software in the past from other vendors and this product far exceeds anything I've used. I now understand why Dragon is the market leader. In fact, I dictated this entire review using the product and only made two minor corrections. I could not be more pleased with this product. I am amazed how much time it saves me during my workday. Buy it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very useful software Tuesday, February 20, 2007 Jim from SoCal
I have had this software about two weeks, and using it to dictate this review. The two key pieces of advice I can offer when considering this product are; go to the knowbrainer.com forum on speech recognition, Nuance.com, and emicrophones.com to do some reading up on a better choice of microphone. The one that comes in the package is adequate but I found it quite uncomfortable for me. My very first purchase after doing some initial training was an Andrea NC 91 to use in place of the stock one.
If you are a fiction writer using unique made-up words or you use colorful language after initial setup and training, spend sometime "teaching" the software your unique vocabulary. Dictate a document chock-full of your unique words, than go in and train the software to recognize them.
The software is licensed to you as an individual so you can put it on as many computers as you utilize.
Aside from a few punctuation corrections, this review was completely dictated. Was this review helpful?

I've used this software since it was Dragon Dictate, decades ago. It has always been best, and continues to evolve and improve. I have no hesitation in recommending it. Was this review helpful?

My last version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking was version 5. The new release, version 9, is about 20% more accurate; with the previous version, I spent most of my time making corrections.
My only complaints are that (1) you have to register the product over the Internet in order to keep using it (the computer that I use for writing is not normally connected to the Internet; I'm sure there is an alternative method for registration, but who wants to mess with this nonsense?) and (2) they're still using the same damn book excerpts for training that they used as far back as version 4 -- and I'm tired of reading the same crap over and over. This version is amazing. At the get-go it is fairly accurate. Further, it learns extremely quickly. It is a vast improvement version 8. My right hand is no longer flaring up from typing. I have this program for less than two weeks and I am using it to type this review today. As you can see, even with a few edits, it is a wonderful program. I highly recommend this to anyone who is in front of the computer alot because it will save your hands. It is truly the best voice recognition program on the market that is affordable to the general public. Was this review helpful?
